Interview with Jenny Burrow
I was invited to speak on public radio and I am so happy that opportunity came. I had a half hour to toot the horn for our Art Integration program and do a little advocacy for the arts in schools. From my understanding, this radio station airs statewide so it has a pretty wide audience. What a great opportunity to speak out in support of something I truly believe in.
I would like to say parents be active and vocal in your child's education. Does your school have an art program? Music, visual arts, dance, theater, poetry and prose? Does your school participate in countywide competitions and showcases?
Art is a valuable resource in a school. Students who participate in the arts thrive with better grades, better attendance, better social/emotional contact, better test scores and a well-rounded whole child education. The arts reach students who learn in different modalities - visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. The list of benefits for students who participate in the arts is way too long to list here, but a big one is mental health. Art heals.
